Daniel Ferreira do Nascimento, 28, has been located in São Paulo, bringing an end to a distressing month-long search and reigniting the conversation around the mental health of elite athletes away from their sport.
The Olympic athlete, who had been missing since June 19, was found alive in the Belenzinho neighborhood, in the East Zone of the São Paulo capital. His discovery came after a passerby recognized him on the street.
After verifying his identity, which Daniel himself confirmed, authorities noted that the young man was in good physical condition. He was then taken to the 30th Police Precinct in Tatuapé, where he was reunited with his family, who immediately traveled there.
Police stated that the athlete did not provide a specific reason for his disappearance, citing "personal problems" for leaving home.
Daniel Ferreira do Nascimento, the South American marathon record holder and Brazil's representative at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, had left his family home in Paraguaçu Paulista with only a black backpack. His disappearance prompted his family, particularly his mother, to launch several social media campaigns and make public appeals for information.
The marathon runner's career was abruptly halted in 2024 when he was suspended from competition due to doping. This forced hiatus led him to return home and, according to reports, he was experiencing significant psychological distress.
In the period leading up to his disappearance, Daniel was under his mother's care, accompanying her to work at a cassava processing company. "He was with me, under my care. I would go to work, and he would come with me. He was always a good boy," stated Valdirene de Paula Ferreira during the search.
Despite being out of official competition, the athlete continued to train informally. "Sometimes, I would take him to run. He would train secretly in the middle of the sugarcane fields. I think he really missed the athlete's routine," his mother revealed. Following the reunion, family and friends are now preparing to provide the necessary emotional support for the young man's recovery.
