Tennis star
Serena on Wednesday, April 19 announced that she was 20 weeks pregnant which means that she was about eight months pregnant when she beat her sister .
The development has prompted conversations about women who have competed in professional sports while pregnant.
Serena is not the first, as several other professional athletes have done so, including Nigerian table tennis star Oshonaike.
Other women who have competed while pregnant include British Olympic cycling champion Laura Kenny and American swimmer Dana Vollmer.
Oshonaike played in several competitions while she was seven-month pregnant.
“I remember my first son, I could remember here in this hall, I trained till I was seven-month pregnant, I was actually playing matches, I was competing with my big belly,” the mother of two told in an interview.
“Doctor said I could play, so I was actually playing.”
Oshonaike competed at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, making her the only second woman athlete to participate in six Olympic Games.
The 41-year-old has won 12 medals in the All Africa Games.
