It's now official. Atlético Madrid has confirmed the signing of Alejandro Grimaldo, who has penned a contract valid until 2030. The Valencian left-back thus makes his return to LaLiga, becoming the Rojiblancos' first acquisition for the new season.
At 30 years old, and set to turn 31 in September, Grimaldo arrives at the Metropolitano after a successful three-season spell with Bayer Leverkusen, where he established himself as one of the German side's key figures. The player, currently competing in the 2026 World Cup with the Spanish national team, is a regular choice for coach Luis de la Fuente.
The contract with the Madrid club spans three seasons, with an option for a further year. His signing was fast-tracked in recent days by Atlético Madrid, who were looking to bolster a position considered lacking in recent seasons, especially after their primary target, Cucurella, moved to rivals Real Madrid.
Grimaldo, a product of La Masía, made his professional football debut in Portugal with Benfica in 2016. During his time at the Estádio da Luz, he played over 300 games, scoring 27 goals and providing 66 assists. In the Bundesliga, his numbers were equally impressive, with 30 goals and 45 assists in less than half the matches played in Portugal.
His tactical versatility will be a significant asset for Diego Simeone. Grimaldo, who played as a wing-back and even an attacking midfielder in Germany, can also operate as a full-back in a four-man defense, as he does for the national team and did in Portugal. With over 4,000 minutes played last season and a history of few injuries, his offensive potential is seen as a new weapon for "El Cholo."
Ten years after leaving Spain without making his LaLiga debut, the Valencian full-back now returns to his home country to represent Atlético Madrid.
