Portuguese tennis player Nuno Borges secured his spot in the Cincinnati Masters 1000 round of 16 on Tuesday, delivering a commanding straight-sets victory over Russia's Andrey Rublev.
Borges, currently ranked 47th in the world, needed just one hour and 12 minutes to dispatch the world No. 18 and tournament's 13th seed, with a final score of 6-3, 6-4. This triumph marks a significant turnaround for the Portuguese player, who had previously lost all five of his direct encounters with Rublev.
At 29 years old, Nuno Borges has now achieved his best-ever performance in Cincinnati. This also marks the second consecutive time the Portuguese has reached the round of 16 at a Masters 1000 event this season, having accomplished the same feat nearly two weeks ago in Montreal, Canada.
In the next stage of the competition, Borges will face the winner of the match between American Brandon Nakashima (world No. 22) and Russia's Daniil Medvedev, currently ranked seventh globally and the tournament's fourth seed.
In contrast, also on Tuesday, Francisco Cabral (29th in the doubles ranking), partnering with American James Tracy (32nd), was eliminated in the opening round of the tournament's doubles draw.
Cabral and Tracy fell to Spain's Marcel Granollers (4th) and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos (3rd), the second seeds, in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, in a match that lasted one hour and 23 minutes.
Portugal has another representative in the tournament's singles draw. Jaime Faria, ranked 79th and a qualifier, is set to play his third-round match today against Australia's Adam Walton (98th). Faria made headlines by eliminating American Ben Shelton, the tournament's sixth seed and recent Montreal champion, in the previous round.
