Notorious Top Tennis Player (30) Unleashes Frustrations, Destroys On-Court Boarding and Microphones
Ranked world number seven and seeded fourth in the American city, Daniil Medvedev was a major draw for the tournament. However, his journey ended prematurely in the third round. Medvedev squandered three match points against American Brandon Nakashima, ultimately losing 2-1 in sets to the world number 22: 7-6, 6-7, and 1-6. During the match, his frustrations once again got the better of him.
The 30-year-old Medvedev is known for easily letting his emotions run wild when things aren't going his way. This was evident against Nakashima in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters. On multiple occasions, the LED boarding behind him bore the brunt of his anger. At one point, he threw his racket so forcefully against it that one of the panels malfunctioned and broke.
A similar incident occurred when he kicked the LED boarding on the other side of the net. Again, the LED display became the target of his frustrations. Towards the end of the match, a court-side microphone also fell victim to Medvedev's rage. The top tennis player knocked several of them over. The reason remains a mystery.
The Russian has often made headlines for the wrong reasons in Cincinnati. In the 2021 edition, he collided hard with a camera positioned in the corner while attempting to retrieve a ball. Furious, he kicked the device and yelled at the umpire that he could have broken his hand. He escaped a fine on that occasion. This time, however, he is likely to face penalties from the organizers for his misconduct.
His prize money of over 53,000 euros will likely go towards paying yet another fine in his career. He can now prepare for the US Open, which begins in less than two weeks. Last year, at the American Grand Slam, he received a fine of over 36,000 euros for on-court misbehavior towards a photographer.
