Moses wins with Chelsea, Onyekuru, Onazi on target in Europe

A review of how Nigerian players fared at their foreign clubs over the weekend.

We start off from England where Victor Moses helped reigning Premier League champions Chelsea to a 2-1 win away at Leicester City. Moses played for 74 minutes before he was replaced by new signing Davide Zappacosta.

For Leicester City, Wilfred Ndidi was on for 90 minutes in the game and was impressive despite being on the losing side. Kelechi Iheanacho came on in the 78 minute while the score was 2-0 but could not help Leicester City find an equaliser.

Ahmed Musa was not listed by Leicester City for the game.

Alex Iwobi was on the bench all through for Arsenal in their 3-0 home win over Bournemouth.

Yet to make an appearance for Watford this season, Isaac Success was on the bench again as the Marco Silva side got a 2-0 win away at Southampton.

In the Championship, newly cleared for Nigeria, Ola Aina played 90 minutes for Hull City in their 5-0 loss to Derby County.

Belgium

Super Eagles star Henry Onyekuru netted a brace for Anderlecht in their 3-2 win over Lokeren. Onyekuru first netted in the third minute before his second in the 77th which brought Anderlecht level.

Peter Olayinka scored for Zulte Waregem in the 2-2 draw with Kortrijk who had another Nigerian Abduljelil Ajagun on for 90 minutes.

Former Nigerian u-23 star Taiwo Awoniyi played 60 minutes for Royal Moucron in their 2-1 win over Club Brugge 2-1.

Super Eagles defender Uche Agbo played 90 minutes for Standard Liege in their goalless draw with Charleroi. He got a yellow card in the 45th minute of that game.

Moses Simon played 74 minutes in Gent’s 1-1 draw with Genk; Anderson Esiti was also in action for Gent and played 90 minutes of the game.

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi was on for 90 minutes as his team Tianjin TEDA suffered a 3-1 loss to Shanghai SIPG.

Nigeria international striker Odion Ighalo could not find the target for Changchun Yatai as they lost 3-1 to Guangzhou Evergrande.

France

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem was on the bench all through watching his Nantes teammate battle to a 1-0 win away at Montpellier.

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun played 90 minutes in Mainz’s big 3-1 victory over Bayern Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga.

Netherlands

Back to Netherland for another loan deal with Arsenal but this time in the top division, Kelechi Nwakali scored on his debut for VVV Venlo in their 1-1 draw away to Groningen. The midfielder entered the game in the 75th minute and grabbed the equaliser in added time.

Italy

Joel Obi played only 10 minutes for Torino before he was stretched out because of an injury. The midfielder’s career has been pledged with injury and the latest one will frustrate the former Inter Milan player. Torino later won their game over Benevento.

Another Nigerian Sadiq Umar was on the bench for Torino.

Turkey

Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi was on target for Trabzonspor in their 3-1 win over Genclebirligi. Onazi sealed the win with his 90th-minute goal after he was introduced in the 88th minute.

Nigeria international left-back Elderson Echiejile was on for 90 minutes as Sivasspor lost 2-0 at home to Kayserispor.

William Troost-Ekong and Mikel Agu played 90 minutes for Bursaspor in their 3-0 win over Akhisar.

Portugal

Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo scored in Feriense’s 3-2 loss to Sporting Lisbon. Etebo was impressive in the game, scoring to give Feriense a 2-1 lead in the 80th minute before he was substituted. He watched from the bench as Sporting Lisbon turned the game around to win 3-2.

Dele Alampasu was not listed for Feriense for the match.

Spain

Nigerian striker Kayode Olanrewaju was introduced in the 65th minute of Girona’s 2-0 to Atletico Bilbao.

Denmark

Nigerian duo of Paul Onuachu and Rilwan Hassan played were in action for Midtjylland in their 4-3 away to FC Copenhagen.

Hassan was replaced his compatriot Onuachu in the 67th minute.

Izunna Uzochukwu scored and received a red card in their first 10 minutes of Odense’s 1-1 draw with Bronby.

Norway

Samuel Adegbenro scored for Rosenborg in their 2-0 away win at Stromsgodest. He was introduced in the 46th minute and doubled Rosenborg’s lead in the 69th minute. That was his seventh goal of the season.

Lillestrom had three Nigerians Moses Ebiye, Chinedu Ezeh and Ifeanyi Matthew in their 1-1 draw away to Haugesund.

Mathew and Ezeh played 90 minutes in the game while Ebiye was introduced in the 87th minute.

In other parts, Shehu Abdullahi played 90 minutes in Anorthosis 1- 0 win over Aris in Cyprus while John Ogu and Anthony Nwakaeme played 90 minutes in Hapoel Be’er Sheba’s home 1-0 win over Ashkelon who had Dele Aiyenugba in goal.
