Nigerian Communications Commission in a bid to dispel the rumours making the rounds that telecom masts are the major cause of cancer, organised a consumer sensitisation program.
It was the subject of discussion at the 77th Nigerian Communications Commission’s consumer outreach programme , held in Kano.
The programme theme was: “Telecom masts and towers, effects on human health.”
Speaking at the event, Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Mrs. Maryam Bayi, said “It has become imperative to correct the misinformation being propagated about the effects of masts and towers on human health. Research conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other technical research institutes have not yet shown any risk to human life as a result of radiation emanating from telecom equipment like mast and towers.”
Adding that all the equipment brought into the country are tested to ensure they meet international industry standards.
On the issue of poor connectivity and other mobile services, Mr. Bayi said 'As you know, MNP(Mobile Number Portability) is a service that enables consumers to move to other networks without losing their original numbers. We are working on this and after sometime we are of the view that it would assist in strengthening the sector.'
