Algeria were beaten 3-1 by the on Saturday, November 12 in Uyo in the matchday two of the qualifiers.

While expressing his disappointment, Leekens also rued the referee’s decision to allow Super Eagles second goal which was to him scored from an offside position.

In the 42nd minute, John Mikel Obi picked up a pass from his midfield partner Oghenekaro Etebo and after hesitating for a few seconds, the midfielder beat the goalkeeper for double Super Eagles lead.

Despite the protest from the Algerian players, the referee correctly ruled Mikel’s strike as a goal as he was played onside by an opposition defender.

The Algerian coach, however, does not agree with the referee’s decision saying “Nigeria’s second goal is not valid. There was indeed an offside position of the attacker.

“The assistant referee did not whistle this blatant foul.

“This goal somewhat deconcentrated my players, especially before the break. With a deficit of one goal, we would have came back in the second half.”

Algeria are now bottom in Group B, level on point with Zambia who have a better goal difference and behind Cameroon who are second with two points, Nigeria lead with maximum six points in two games.
