The New York Rangers' nine-game NHL winning streak was broken after they were beaten 2-1 by the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.

Valtteri Filppula scored with 65 seconds remaining in the third period to down the rampant Rangers as the Lightning recorded just their second win in six.

The Lightning took the lead in the first period through Alex Killorn before Dominic Moore equalised, but Filppula netted the decider with his team short-handed.

Rangers are now 14-3-2 this season, with Tampa Bay moving up to third in the Atlantic Division.

The Dallas Stars enhanced their winning run to four games with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals.

Jason Spezza scored the winning goal midway through the final period to ensure all their results so far this season have ended in regulation.

Elsewhere, Melker Karlsson scored three minutes, 45 seconds into overtime to secure a shut-out victory for the San Jose Sharks, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 1-0 at Wells Fargo Center.

The Montreal Canadiens lost for the third time in four games, downed 3-2 by the Arizona Coyotes.

Pittsburgh held on to record a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche with the Penguins having to rely on a three-goal burst in the second period to secure their second consecutive win.

The St Louis Blues overcame the Buffalo Sabres after a shoot-out, as Alexander Steen scored the only goal following a 2-2 draw.

Erik Karlsson scored twice in two minutes as the Ottawa Senators eased past the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0.

The Anaheim Ducks sealed a 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers and the Boston Bruins continued their mixed run of form to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2.
