Amidst the summer sales of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, and the potential departure of Bruno Guimarães, Newcastle United is set to retain at least one of its star players for the upcoming season. Winger Harvey Barnes has signed a new long-term contract with the club, though the exact duration was not disclosed.

The 28-year-old joined Newcastle in the summer of 2023, with the Magpies paying Leicester City €44 million for his services. Since then, Barnes has made 120 appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals and providing 14 assists. He also has two caps for the England national team.

“It feels great to sign this new contract so early before the start of the new season. My time here so far has been incredible, and I’m delighted to extend it. As soon as I joined the club, I quickly realized how special this place is, but after three years here, I’m even more convinced. I love everything about it – the city, the stadium, the people – so I’m truly happy to prolong my stay. I’ve tasted success over the past few years and enjoyed some very special moments with this team. We all want more of that, and I hope to be a key player in pushing the club forward,” a delighted Barnes told the club’s official website.

“Harvey’s new contract is well-deserved and reflects the hard work he’s put in and the class he’s shown throughout his three years at Newcastle. Harvey is a player who regularly delivers special moments in crucial times for the team. He’s composed in front of goal, whether he’s one-on-one with the keeper or striking from distance. He’s also always a threat on the flanks. Harvey has extensive experience at the highest level, but we believe there’s even more to come from him,” commented Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

“Harvey’s statistics for the club speak for themselves. He reached new personal heights last season, which is a testament to his mentality and professionalism that we see every day. We consider him a vital part of our future plans, and it was only logical to secure his stay. Everyone knows what Harvey is capable of on and off the pitch. He is fully focused on the upcoming season, and I know he wants to ensure he continues to build on everything he has achieved so far at Newcastle,” explained the club’s sporting director, Ross Wilson.
