Newcastle Considers Loan Move for Striker Signed for €75 Million Just a Year Ago
Nick Voltemade's future at Newcastle appears uncertain, just a year after his arrival in England. The striker joined St. James' Park in the summer of 2025 from Stuttgart for a staggering €75 million (approximately £69 million), making him one of the most expensive transfers in the club's history. According to The Athletic, the Magpies' management has already informed the 24-year-old German that he is free to seek a new team on loan for the 2026/27 season. The club hopes that a temporary move will allow the forward to regain his confidence and accumulate playing time. The German international started well with the English side, and initial signs were positive; he scored three goals in his first four matches, placing him immediately behind Erling Haaland in terms of goal-scoring during that period. However, he gradually found himself more frequently on the bench or deployed behind the main striker.
As the season progressed, however, the 1.98m tall striker's form sharply declined. His statistics for the 2025/26 Premier League campaign show 33 appearances, with 8 goals and 3 assists. While these numbers don't seem catastrophic, a significant portion of his goals came in the early phase of the season, and his last league goal before the campaign's end was in December. Ultimately, he lost his starting spot to players like William Osula, whose effectiveness proved to be higher.
The contrast with his performance at Stuttgart during the 2024/25 season is stark. In Germany, Voltemade was a key figure, scoring 12 goals in 29 Bundesliga matches, which prompted Newcastle's substantial investment. However, difficulties adapting to the physical style of play in England proved to be a serious obstacle for the German international, who has 12 caps and 4 goals for his country.
Currently, there is no shortage of interest in Voltemade. West Ham is touted as one of the favorites for his signature, despite the Hammers' relegation from the top flight. Clubs from Spain's La Liga and Italy's Serie A are also monitoring the situation, and a return to his native Germany remains an option for a career reboot. At one point, Atletico Madrid was considered a favorite for his signature, but Spanish media linked such a deal to a potential departure of Julián Álvarez.
