National Coach Ronald Koeman Receives Widespread Support After Oranje Departure: 'I'm Incredibly Grateful to Him'

National coach Ronald Koeman has bid farewell to the Dutch national team. After six years, spread across two periods, he has chosen to focus more on his private life, partly due to the health of his seriously ill wife, Bartina. In the Sportnieuws.nl World Cup football podcast, Ralf Seuntjens and Robert Maaskant react to Koeman's departure, stating that he 'gave Oranje its spark back'.

"I'm incredibly grateful to Koeman," Seuntjens begins, addressing the national coach's departure. "However, it's also good that a fresh wind will blow through the Dutch national team after this period. This squad needs to be refreshed, especially when you look at the ages of players like Van Dijk (34) and Memphis (32)."

'Go Enjoy Life'

Former coach Robert Maaskant describes Koeman's tenure as 'solid' and understands the national coach's frustration with all the criticism surrounding Oranje. "I completely get why Koeman would say that Oranje had a bit of bad luck with Morocco. And why he'd say: everyone can just go to hell. If you have to go to a job every day where there's nothing but negativity, that makes for a very unpleasant working environment."

"I would find that very sensible," Maaskant responds to the suggestion that Koeman might end his coaching career. "When you consider everything he's experienced – championships, dismissals, and stints at the biggest clubs…" Maaskant continues. "Wouldn't you want to enjoy life a little? Go see the world and do things you've never discovered. Football life is incredibly tough; go and enjoy yourself."

'Oranje Has Its Spark Back'

Football reporter Aron Kattenpoel Oude Heerink emphasizes that Koeman's impact on Oranje should not be forgotten. "He truly pulled the Netherlands out of a slump in 2018 and really gave the country its spark back. Everyone is now talking about the second period, full of grumbling and sluggish football, but we genuinely enjoyed that first period."

Maaskant fully agrees. "Ralf and I aren't nearly as negative about Koeman. That's mainly the general sentiment among people at home and online. Under him, we reached the semi-finals of the European Championship and the Nations League final in 2019. And that's for a small footballing nation. But it's true that Koeman didn't get everything out of his time as Oranje's national coach," the former coach concludes.
