National Coach Ronald Koeman Receives Full Credit for Bold Decision: 'Enjoyed the Netherlands' Play'
"We're going to be world champions," Robert Maaskant exclaims, somewhat jokingly, after the Dutch national team's 5-1 victory over Sweden. "As Dutch people, we should be that opportunistic," Ralf Seuntjens laughs. "That's how it works in the end. But they genuinely played very well today, I thought. I truly enjoyed the Dutch national team's performance."
Brobbey's Selection
Oranje was already 2-0 up after just over fifteen minutes, thanks to two goals from Brian Brobbey. The Sunderland striker earned a surprising starting spot for the Netherlands and did not disappoint. "It was an entertaining match, and Brobbey's inclusion was quite a surprise. We might have hoped for it, but didn't expect it from the conservative Koeman. But it paid off fantastically. This is a real boost for the Dutch national team," Maaskant states.
Seuntjens is also incredibly enthusiastic about Koeman's tactical change from last week. "We must now give Koeman and his staff credit. Because it was simply a very good decision. Hats off to Koeman and his staff," he praises the Oranje coaching team. "I've been advocating for Brobbey for a long time because he stays high up in the opponent's half."
Free-flowing Oranje
This leads to a completely different style of play, which suited Oranje well, Seuntjens notes. "He doesn't drop ten meters deep to receive the ball in midfield, something Memphis and the other strikers do. By keeping the field stretched, you can play him in behind. He does that very effectively. This creates space in midfield, allowing for easier football," the striker analyzes.
Thus, Koeman's choice proved to be of great value to this Oranje side. They played more offensively, which also generated more positivity among the fans. "The entire Dutch team thrived in this setup. I find that beautiful," Seuntjens concludes.
