President of Mauritania orders 'boring' football match to end
President of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz ordered the end of a football match because it was too boring.
Abdel Aziz was watching the Supercup match between FC Tevragh-Zeina and ACS Ksar but ordered the referee in the 63rd minute to end the game and proceed straight to penalties.
According to reports, the president had important affairs of state to attend to as the match was being played on the 55th anniversary of the country's independence.
Controversies trailed his actions as fans the defeated team, ACS Ksar are violently protesting their president decision to end the game.
Head of the Mauritanian Football Federation has however insisted that the decision to end the game was not made by Adbel Aziz alone and revealed that the president has not come against FIFA's requirements for non-interference by government in football.
"I deny in the strongest terms the intervention of the President of the Republic. The decision was made due to organisational issues in accordance with the presidents and the coaches of the two teams," Ahmed Ould Abderrahmane said.
It remains to be seen if FIFA will take any action, or if the President's actions might establish some kind of precedent.
Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz became president after leading a coup in August 2008 to topple President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.
