Former Netherlands international Mark van Bommel is a leading candidate for the head coach position of the Belgian national team, according to "De Telegraaf." The publication reports that the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) sees him as the ideal successor to the current manager.
The RBFA previously announced that they would not be renewing the contract of coach Rudi Garcia. The Frenchman's contract expires on July 31, 2026. Under his leadership, the "Red Devils" reached the quarterfinals of the last World Cup, where they were defeated 2-1 by Spain.
Most recently, the 49-year-old Van Bommel managed Royal Antwerp from 2024-2026, winning the Belgian Cup with the team. His coaching resume also includes stints at PSV Eindhoven (including their youth squad) and German club Wolfsburg.
Interestingly, Van Bommel's name was also linked with the national team of his native Netherlands. According to "Kicker" magazine, the Dutch Football Association held talks with him, as current coach Ronald Koeman is expected to take over Barcelona after Euro 2026. Julian Nagelsmann and Peter Bosz were also mentioned as potential candidates for that role.
