Foxborough witnessed one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. Paraguay, who advanced to the knockout stage only as a third-place team in their group, managed to defeat favored Germany. The fate of the match was decided by a penalty shootout, where the South American players triumphed 4:3.
For Manuel Neuer, this match also held personal significance. The experienced goalkeeper returned to the national team specifically for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, and all indications suggest it was his final appearance in the national jersey.
"It's incredibly bitter, but against a team like that, you have to create more scoring opportunities. From our side, it simply wasn't enough. I did everything in my power," stated the 40-year-old German, who spoke to ZDF reporters after Monday's match.
"The coach said a few words to us, but otherwise, there was a deathly silence in the locker room. Everyone is disappointed and sad about the elimination. Today, we didn't have the strength to turn the game in our favor, and we also lacked luck," added Manuel Neuer in an interview for MagentaTV.
However, questions also hang over the future of coach Julian Nagelsmann. Despite the World Cup failure, the German coach indicated that he would like to continue leading the national team and complete his vision for the squad.
