Mother of Stoke City striker, Mame Biram Diouf was among the people that died during a stampede in Mecca in September.

Nearly a million people were died from the stampede during the annual Haji pilgrimage on September 24 in the city of Mina.

Diouf received the news on Monday, October 5 that his mother, Gnilane, was among the dead victims.

She was attending a ritual called 'stoning the devil', where pebbles are thrown at large pillars along with her daughter, Diouf's who escaped minor injuries.

Gnilane Diouf's body was identified on Monday which the club confirmed on Tuesday.

“Stoke wish to extend sincere condolences to Mame Diouf following the tragic death of his mother,” a statement from the club read.

“The club will provide Mame with all the support he needs at this extremely difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friend.”

The striker is currently injured having been stretched out in Stoke City’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa shortly before full-time.
