Legendary former Liverpool player and ex-manager of Newcastle and England, Kevin Keegan, has passed away at the age of 75. He had been battling cancer, a diagnosis he revealed in January. In early June, Keegan announced that the disease had reached a terminal stage and bid farewell to his loved ones.
In a statement, his family announced: “It is with immense sadness that we announce Kevin Keegan passed away at the age of 75. The former England international and manager had been fighting cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments. Kevin, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, was a much-loved husband, father, and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin's incredible medical team for all their support. This is an extremely difficult time, and they ask for privacy and space.”
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean, and their children Laura Jane (47) and Sarah Marie (43).
The son of a miner, born in Geordie, Keegan was a pioneer of modern football – negotiating his own contracts, appearing in television commercials, and moving abroad to further his career at the peak of his fame with Liverpool in the 1970s.
Keegan won three league titles, two UEFA Cups, and an FA Cup before moving to Hamburger SV after lifting the European Cup with the all-conquering Merseyside giants in 1977.
