Former World Cup goal-scoring record holder Miroslav Klose reportedly called Lionel Messi to congratulate him after the Argentine superstar broke his record at the 2026 World Cup. The German legend previously led with 16 goals, but before the match against Egypt, Messi had already netted 20, while France's Kylian Mbappé sits in second place with 19.

"Messi is an extraordinary phenomenon. His coach, Lionel Scaloni, was my teammate at Lazio, and we still keep in touch. He connected me with Messi after he equaled my record. It was very exciting," Klose stated, as quoted by DPA.

This information was initially shared by the German club Nuremberg, which published Klose's statement today.

"Messi and I met on the football pitch from time to time. We always treated each other with respect. However, this conversation was the first time we spoke at length about the topic. He promised to send me a signed jersey," the former striker added, as reported by BTA.
