McCarthy - speaking at the NFL owners meetings on Wednesday - said: "It was something that was kind of hindering him after the Pro Bowl. Something that he felt he needed to get cleaned up."
He added that Nelson's expected recovery time is six to eight weeks, meaning that he should be fit for training camp in late July.
Nelson had his best season in the NFL during his 2014-15 campaign. He set career highs with 98 receptions and 1,519 receiving yards and will again be one of quarterback Aaron Rodgers' top targets next season.
