Portuguese tennis has fresh cause for celebration as Jaime Faria secures his spot in the Wimbledon main draw. The Lisbon native overcame Japan's Rei Sakamoto in the third and final qualifying round for the season's third Grand Slam.
In a match lasting two hours and 33 minutes, the 22-year-old Faria, seeded second in qualifying, defeated the world No. 148 in four sets, with scores of 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3, and 6-4.
This victory marks the Portuguese athlete's seventh consecutive appearance in the main draw of a major tournament. Notably, Faria also advanced from the qualifying rounds at Roland Garros, where he reached the third round.
This will be Jaime Faria's second time competing in the main draw of the only grass-court Grand Slam. In his previous appearance in 2025, he was eliminated in the first round by Italy's Lorenzo Sonego.
At the All England Club, Faria, currently ranked 97th in the world, joins Nuno Borges in the men's singles draw, while Francisco Cabral will represent the nation in the doubles competition. The main draws for the tournament are set to begin next Monday.
