WEST PALM BEACH — Roughly 30 minutes from Portugal's headquarters, the homeland came alive in flesh and accent. It was there that we encountered members of West Palm Beach's small but proud Portuguese community. Dressed in the colors of the country where most of them were born over 60 years ago, these resilient emigrants gathered at the Luso-American Cultural Society of Palm Beach County. The occasion was significant: to watch and cheer on the national team's friendly match against Nigeria, their final warm-up before the official start of the World Cup.

At the association's tables, comfort was found in slices of bread accompanying traditional liver and onions, cooked with the precision and vinegar that only memory can replicate thousands of miles away. But the true feast was one of affection. When the first notes of "A Portuguesa" (the Portuguese national anthem) echoed through the room's speakers, time stood still in Florida.

Tears flowed, born of a deep and long-held longing, the kind that tightens the chest, especially during the national anthem. For those far from home, the spectacle of Ronaldo and his teammates is far more than just football; it's the umbilical cord that connects them to their motherland.
