"If you're not perfect, you don't play!" Has Miami lost patience with Nikola Jović?
While Kelel Ver and Pele Larson earned praise for their noticeable progress, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. for successfully returning to form after a challenging period, the message directed at Serbian international Nikola Jović carried a different tone – one of a direct challenge.
Speaking about the Serbian national team player, Spoelstra drew a parallel with Jaquez.
"However frustrated he might have been this season, or felt unlucky, the same story happened to Jaime last season. But Jaime didn't make excuses for anything. He simply understood he had to be better. It wasn't his idea to blame anyone, but just to get to work and put in the effort. That will be Nikola's task this summer: not to think like a victim, not to blame anyone, but to get down to business and work on himself, to improve in the areas he needs to fix. He'll be fine."
Although his words could be interpreted as a critique of the young player's attitude, the Miami coach attempted to soften the rhetoric, reminding everyone of Jović's inherent basketball attributes.
"The qualities he brings to the court and his size, that's what we haven't lost when it comes to him. He just needs to step onto the court and take responsibility, be ready for training camp next fall, and reach his potential."
The player did not remain silent regarding his coach's remarks and spoke candidly about the harsh reality of playing within a system like Miami's.
"At one point, you feel like you've done enough, and then suddenly you're at the end of the bench and you don't see the court anymore. A lot of ups and downs. But that's probably how it is when you're in Miami, I guess. You have to be good every night to play. I have to be perfect to get regular minutes, because otherwise, I'll be at the end of the bench."
This season, he played 47 games, with his stats being the weakest since his rookie year. Averaging 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, with only one start, it's clear that Jović still needs to justify his new four-year, $62 million contract.
