The Barcelona Femeni star was on Thursday, April 7th, reportedly stripped of Super Falcons captaincy ahead of the double-header friendlies against Canada.

Oshoala who had been the leader of the team for the last 30 months after being elevated to the position in September 2019, reacted on social media hours after the news broke out, revealing that she was left in the dark by the NFF.

"LMAO, I’m just hearing this oo but okay", the former Liverpool star said.

According to reports, the NFF and coach Randy Waldrum agreed to take off the captaincy band from the Barcelona star as it had been taking a toll on her.

The striker is currently recovering from a thigh injury that has already ruled her out for the remainder of the season.

The four-time Africa Women’s player of the year was in-line to feature for the team in their Africa Women's Cup Of Nations qualifier against Ivory Coast but was ruled due to the knockout.

Oshoala has not played for Nigeria since the Aisha Buhari Cup in September 2021 and is expected to be replaced with Onome Ebi, the longest-serving player in the team.

Oshoala's predecessor, Desire Oparanozie was in 2019, also stripped of the captaincy in controversial circumstances.

Oparanozie had led a pay strike at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France after the NFF reportedly owed the team bonuses. She also demanded equal pay for Super Falcons players, one which the NFF refused to consider.

The Super Falcons also on Thursday, arrived in Vancouver - the venue for their double-header friendlies against Canada.

According to the secretary of the NFF, Dr Mohammed Sanusi General the reason for the friendly against Canada was to "get the girls the best of preparation possible" ahead of the 2023 Africa Women's Cup of Nations in Morocco.
