The final of the Tulln Challenger tournament in Austria witnessed a historic moment in tennis. Swiss player Mika Brunold and Brazil's João Lucas Reis da Silva, both openly gay, faced off, with the Swiss player ultimately claiming victory. However, the significance of the match extended far beyond the scoreline.
Played on clay, this was the first professional circuit match to feature two publicly out gay players. João Lucas Reis da Silva, 26, was the first to come out in December 2024. Approximately a year later, in November 2025, 21-year-old Mika Brunold followed suit.
At the time, the Swiss tennis player explained his decision as a significant personal step, but also as a way to break the silence surrounding the topic in sports. "In an ideal world, we wouldn't even have to come out about our sexuality," he stated then.
After winning the final with a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline, Brunold addressed his opponent, acknowledging his influence. "A year after you came out, I came out, and you were a huge inspiration to me. I'm proud of us; we can be role models for people struggling with their sexuality. So, once again, thank you very much," the victor declared.
With this triumph in Tulln, marking his first title of the season, Mika Brunold is set to climb to a career-high 257th in the world rankings. The Swiss player also boasts three semi-final appearances, all on the lower-tier circuit.
