Headaches for National Coach Ronald Koeman: Oranje's Injury List Grows

The Dutch national team enjoyed a fantastic evening against Sweden. The Oranje played fresh, attacking football and ultimately secured a convincing 5-1 victory. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for national coach Ronald Koeman. Behind the broad smiles lie significant injury concerns ahead of the next match against Tunisia.

The sheer number of players leaving the field with various knocks will undoubtedly be a concern for Koeman. Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, Brian Brobbey, Cody Gakpo, and Crysencio Summerville all picked up something during the match. This casts a considerable shadow over the Netherlands' sparkling victory.

Van Dijk Alarmed by Peculiar Complaint

For captain Virgil van Dijk, it briefly looked serious. The Liverpool defender took a knock during the game and then felt something strange in his body. "I took a hit on my hip and then I couldn't feel my upper leg anymore. So that was a bit odd, but it was probably a nerve," Van Dijk explained to NOS.

De Jong Plays Through Pain

Frenkie de Jong was already a major talking point beforehand. The midfielder had been struggling with knee complaints this week after an unfortunate collision in training with Quinten Timber. Nevertheless, the playmaker started the match against Sweden.

However, he wasn't entirely pain-free. "I do have some pain, but it was manageable. We'll see how it reacts, but I'm confident it will be fine," De Jong stated.

Concerns for Summerville and Gakpo

Crysencio Summerville also caused a scare. The attacker, who scored one goal, took a knee to the head during a challenge and couldn't continue playing. "He has a slight headache now, but I don't think this will be a problem for our next match against Tunisia," Koeman said at the press conference.

There were also some worries about Gakpo. The Liverpool forward was substituted shortly before full-time for Noa Lang and was later seen on the sidelines with a large ice pack on his right arm. Television cameras immediately captured the moment, leading to a rapid increase in concern on social media. Afterwards, it turned out to be less serious than it appeared. Gakpo seems to have avoided any serious injury.

Brobbey Shines and Worries

Finally, there are also concerns about the evening's standout performer: Brian Brobbey. The striker made his first start in a major tournament and immediately repaid Koeman's trust with two goals. The attacker was a constant menace to the Swedish defense and looked incredibly strong.

However, even for him, the match had an unpleasant ending. Brobbey was substituted after seventy minutes for Memphis Depay, and it later emerged that this wasn't solely a tactical decision. "Brobbey had a bit of a hamstring issue, hopefully, it's not too bad," Koeman revealed to NOS.

Despite the comprehensive victory, Koeman will primarily be hoping that the treatment room empties out in the coming days. The Dutch national team has already secured their spot in the next round, but injuries never come at a convenient time.
