Haiti on the Brink of a Sensation, Morocco Survives Scare. Substitutions Save Africans
Haiti approached the favored opponent without deference, creating a massive surprise in just the tenth minute. Jean-Kévin Duverne delivered a sharp pass from the right wing into the box, where Lenny Joseph connected with the ball. With an unfortunate deflection off goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who was credited with an own goal, Haiti opened the scoring. The Moroccans immediately launched into attack. Just three minutes later, Ismael Saibari squandered a golden opportunity, and after half an hour, the exceptionally active Achraf Hakimi was thwarted on a breakaway by the excellent goalkeeper Johny Placide. However, the relentless pressure from the African representative paid off in the 39th minute. Placide could only parry a dangerous cross from Bilal El Khannouss, and the persistent Hakimi bundled the ball over the line at the goalmouth. Yet, the determined underdog refused to give up, regaining the lead just before halftime when Wilson Isidor unleashed a magnificent shot into the top corner. The wild first half concluded in stoppage time with Saibari, who, after Hakimi's precise cross, ruthlessly slotted the ball past the post to equalize at 2-2.
After the break, the game resembled a siege on Haiti's defenses. The Caribbean team significantly improved their defense, keeping their opponents at bay for an extended period. While Morocco controlled possession, clear-cut chances were hard to come by. The turning point came after a tactical substitution when the coach sent Soufiane Rahimi onto the pitch. It was Rahimi who, in the 78th minute, best positioned himself in the penalty area following a corner kick and, with the aid of a deflection, put Morocco ahead for the first time in the match. The same offensive catalyst struck again ten minutes later, dispossessing a hesitant defender, Arcus, and setting up Jassim Yassine perfectly. Yassine then simply tapped the ball into an open net, sealing the final score at 4-2. In the final five minutes of stoppage time, Haiti threatened with a powerful direct free-kick from Duckens Nazon, but goalkeeper Bounou held firm this time, and the score remained unchanged.
