The Brazilian veteran secured his fourth consecutive victory, overcoming Anthony Hernandez in the main event of UFC Sacramento on Saturday. Rodriguez earned a unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 48-47). With this win, the fighter, boasting a record of 20 wins and 6 losses, significantly stakes his claim for a middleweight title shot.
Following his epic win, Rodriguez celebrated his first five-round victory and promptly called out former UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus du Plessis.
"Dricus du Plessis, where are you, man?" Rodriguez declared in his post-fight interview. "I want you. Come on. Number one contender for a title fight. Dricus du Plessis, I want you."
Rodriguez certainly delivered a performance worthy of championship aspirations, navigating Hernandez's signature style to secure the win. Hernandez immediately pressured Rodriguez, seeking takedowns early and often. Rodriguez displayed excellent takedown defense, even when Hernandez pinned him against the cage, changing levels and grips in an attempt to bring him to the ground.
Despite Hernandez's attempts to stifle him, Rodriguez found success in the first two rounds, inflicting more damage when separated and attacking Hernandez with low kicks that seemed to significantly bother him. However, Hernandez rallied in the third round, finally managing to take Rodriguez down and seemingly draining him, starting to find success on the feet as well.
Hernandez is known for strong performances in later rounds, but on Saturday, it was Rodriguez who made the crucial adjustments to turn the tide back in his favor. Rodriguez's corner instructed him to stop retreating, and he followed their advice precisely, pushing forward in the fourth round and forcing Hernandez to fight him in the center of the octagon. This limited Hernandez's takedown opportunities, forcing him to trade strikes with Rodriguez – a challenge he didn't shy away from.
Rodriguez sealed his victory with a strong fifth round, consistently outstriking Hernandez on the feet, despite his opponent somehow never being visibly rocked or dropped by the Brazilian's accurate shots.
With this win, Rodriguez improved his UFC record to 11-3 and is now knocking on the door for a title shot. For his part, Hernandez suffered his second consecutive loss for the first time in his career, having previously been on an eight-fight winning streak.
