Glorious Malaga Returns to La Liga

Malaga is the latest team to secure promotion to La Liga for the 2026/2027 season. The club, which famously made a splash in the Champions League in the early 2010s, has returned to Spain's top flight after defeating Almeria 2-1 away in the final promotion playoff. The first leg, played a week prior, had ended in a goalless draw.

The match was not without its drama, as the Iberian Peninsula clash kicked off half an hour late. This delay was due to Almeria's home supporters attacking the Malaga team bus.

After a scoreless first half, Chuppe opened the scoring in the 65th minute, with David Larubia doubling the lead in the 72nd. Just four minutes later, in the 76th minute, Leo Baptistao pulled one back for Almeria, but the home side couldn't find an equalizer.

In added time, tempers flared, and both teams finished the playoff with ten men. Talis received a straight red card, while Aaron Ochoa was shown a second yellow.
