Germany Popp toothless Spain to book quarter-final spot as Denmark revives WEURO hopes

Germany confirmed its position as favourite in Group D following a clinical 2-0 victory over Spain on Tuesday night in Brentford. 

Wolfsburg forward Alexandra Popp proved to be the main woman again for the Germans after making it two goals in two matches at the WEURO2022.

Spain controlled proceedings at the Community Stadium, dominating possession in both halves but Germany was the one who did the scoring. 

Klara Buhl opened the count as early as the third minute when she capitalised on a mistake from Sandra Panos to put German ahead.

Popp doubled their advantage after the half-hour mark with a towering header to give the Germans a comfortable lead heading into the break. 

Things nearly got worse for Spain when Irene Paredes was almost sent off for a careless foul on Popp before an excellent save from Merle Frohms denied Spain from pulling a goal back.

With the victory at the Brentford Stadium, Germany has now confirmed their place in the last eight with a game to spare.

The Germans will take on Finland in the final game of the group stages on Saturday, while Spain faces Denmark in a battle that will determine who joins Germany in the next round.

In the other Group D match, it was Denmark who had the last laugh after finally getting off the mark in the Women's European Championship.

Pernille Harder was the heroine for the Danes after she netted the only goal of the game against Finland.

In a keenly contested encounter at Milton Keynes, Denmark revived their WEURO2022 hopes with a narrow win over Finland.

Both teams had chances to score but fans were meant to wait until the 72nd minute for the breakthrough which came via Denmark. 

Harder headed what turned out to be the decisive winner off a rebound at the near post after Karen Holmgaard's header came off the crossbar. 

The Danes had goalkeeper, Lene Christensen, to thank after she produced a great save at the death to preserve the win and crucial three points that see them head into Saturday's final game against Spain with all to play for.
