NPFL golden boot winner says Super Eagles omission was blessing in disguise

Warri Wolves striker Gbolahan Salami who just finished as the highest goalscorer in this season Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has described his omission from the Super Eagles squad as a ‘blessing in disguise’.

Despite his good form in the league, the 24-year-old was not included in the Super Eagles team to face Swaziland in a 2018 World Cup qualifiers double header.

The striker however has however revealed that it was a blessing in disguise which allowed him to achieve a bigger individual honour with his club.

The striker was available for his club to bag a brace against FC Taraba in a rescheduled league match on Monday, November 16.

Salami would have not been able to play the game against Taraba FC if he was in the Super Eagles squad that played in the second leg 2018 World Cup qualifiers win over Swaziland on Tuesday.

“I am glad that d I was left out of the squad, because it enabled me help my club to win our last game of the season and get a brace to push me up the ladder as the top scorer in the league,” the striker told Football Live.

“I know timing is divine and only God knows why it happened that way but I am happy it turned out well for the team and myself.”

The brace ensures Salami finished the season with 17 goals and will be the recipient of the maiden Rashidi Yekini Highest Goal Scorer Award instituted by the NPFL in Yekini’s honor.
