The Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Cyprian Onyeji, has appealed for assistance as the institution struggles to get meet its financial obligation.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the institution's 16th convocation ceremonies which will hold on Saturday March 21, 2015, Onyeji said the institution does not get enough funds to run the institution properly.
He said projects executed at the institution were executed with funds from 'friends of the university' because the money it gets for "recurrent expenditure is not enough."
"The infrastructure developments you are seeing in the university were made possible by donations from friends of the university, alumni, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and the state government," he said."
The Vice Chancellor thanked the state government for "funding the university" but noted that "we are not yet close to where we ought to be financially.
"We appreciate that the government alone cannot efficiently and effectively fund tertiary education."
Onyeji then called for support from individuals and corporate bodies.
"On our own part, we shall continue to strive to increase our internally-generated revenue, but we earnestly appeal to all friends of the university, alumni, eminent sons and daughters of the state, philanthropic Nigerians, corporate bodies and the private sector to come to the support of the university."
ESUT was founded in 1979 as the Anambra State University of Science and Technology Enugu.
