Stan Wawrinka hails 'best match of my life' after French Open win
Stan Wawrinka hailed his victorious showing against Novak Djokovic in the French Open final as the match of his life.
Wawrinka produced a magnificent performance at Roland Garros against the world number one to come from a set down to claim a 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 success.
Djokovic had appeared in command after taking the first set, but Wawrinka displayed impressive resiliency throughout to turn things around and then come back from a break down in the fourth to emerge victorious.
The triumph marked Wawrinka's second grand slam triumph, following on from his Australian Open win in 2014, and prevented Djokovic from earning a career Slam.
And Wawrinka said: "To play against Novak is a huge challenge. He's a very fair player but I played the match of my life.
"It's just immense to beat Novak. I know for him Roland Garros was very important. He deserves to win here. The crowd was amazing, really nice, great atmosphere to play in. I hope you all enjoyed it."
Wawrinka - who will move to number four in the world courtesy of the result - added: "My first thoughts are with my team. It's a lot of hard work and it's finally paid off.
"Sometimes they kicked my backside but it worked. That's why we're here."
