Lewis Hamilton's attempts to overtake Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in the Formula One drivers' championship took a dent on Friday after a crash wiped out his second practice session.

The double-defending world champion spun off the track at turn 11 and thudded into the tyre wall side on, damaging his front wing.

Just 15 minutes into FP2, Hamilton had completed just four laps in a session that teams typically utilise to test their race set-up, leaving the Briton with little information heading into Sunday.

Though the damage appeared largely superficial, Mercedes confirmed that the car would have to be stripped to rule out any further issues, ending Hamilton's session.

Hamilton comes into the weekend just one point behind Rosberg in the drivers' standings, having sat 43 points behind his team-mate earlier in the season.

Things had looked much rosier for Hamilton when he topped the timesheets in FP1 by more than two tenths from his team-mate as the Mercedes pair entered a league of their own.

Sebastian Vettel spent plenty of time facing the wrong way as his Ferrari struggled to get to grips with the new asphalt in Hungary.

In a calm start to FP1 brought on by a damp track, Rosberg tip-toed his way around the new kerbing which has taken up plenty of pre-weekend attention. The German was spotted deliberately driving up and over the embanked edges of the track.

Once the track dried up, the Silver Arrows suggested that pace will dominate, Rosberg taking 1.2 seconds off his lap time after swapping softs for super soft tyres.

Rosberg dipped into the 1:20s in FP2, eventually setting the benchmark for time at one minute and 20.4 seconds.

The McLarens of Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso placed in the top 10 in both sessions as the embattled constructor's resurgence continues, with Williams the team to drop out - both Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa enduring massive drop-offs in time after only a handful of laps on super soft tyres.
