Former Semifinalist Collides Hard with Fence at Wimbledon, Forced to Retire; Opponent Thrilled

At 34 years old, Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreno-Busta has secured his first-ever victory at Wimbledon. The former top-ten player had previously exited in the first round in all seven of his prior appearances, but on his eighth attempt, he advanced to the second round for the first time in his career on Monday. This progression, however, came courtesy of his opponent Denis Shapovalov's retirement.

Carreno-Busta, last seen at Wimbledon in 2022, made his return to the hallowed grass courts of the London Grand Slam on Monday after a four-year absence. He faced Denis Shapovalov in the first round, a player who reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2021. The Canadian also held a thirty-place advantage over the Spaniard in the world rankings, suggesting Carreno-Busta would need all the help he could get.

Carreno-Busta had Shapovalov on the ropes early, winning the first set 6-3. However, the Canadian fought back, forcing a tiebreak in the second set. Disaster struck for Shapovalov during the tiebreak when, in a desperate attempt to retrieve a difficult ball, he slid and collided with the court-side fence. Clutching his shoulder with a grimace of pain, the crowd held its breath as the umpire quickly rushed to check on the former top player.

Retirement

Gritting his teeth, Shapovalov attempted to continue and win the second set, but the damage was too severe and the pain too intense to finish the match. Trailing two sets to love, the Canadian was forced to retire, handing his Spanish opponent a memorable victory on the English grass. Carreno-Busta now faces a formidable challenge in the second round against his compatriot Rafael Jodar (named after tennis legend Rafael Nadal), who is currently ranked 26th in the world.

Despite the early exit, Shapovalov will still take home €92,000 in prize money.
