The conduct of some Argentine national team players following their World Cup final loss to Spain continues to dominate European sports headlines, with negative commentary against the South Americans showing no signs of abating.
Former German international Dietmar Hamann is the latest to weigh in, calling for severe penalties for the Argentine players who instigated altercations with Spanish footballers. Specifically, Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina are cited for physically confronting Gavi, Eric Garcia, and Rodri.
The 52-year-old former Bayern Munich and Liverpool player commented on the behavior of the two "Gauchos" to Sky Sport Austria, demanding strict sanctions. "I would ban both of them for a year and then let them decide if they want to return. Such behavior is unacceptable," Hamann stated, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
He added: "This must be punished, and there should be no leniency whatsoever. I would suspend both of them for 12 months."
In conclusion, Hamann remarked that through their actions, the players significantly damaged the reputation their team had built. "They destroyed much of the good name they had earned, largely thanks to Messi, of course," he finished.
