Marseille president Pablo Longoria has spoken out about a serious incident involving players Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe, which led to their suspension from the first team and placement on the transfer list.
Following the team's opening-day loss in Ligue 1, Rabiot and Rowe were involved in a heated verbal exchange. The situation escalated, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Geronimo Rulli, and Leo Balerdi also reportedly becoming extremely agitated, prompting coach Roberto De Zerbi to intervene forcefully. As a result, both Rabiot and Rowe have been made available for transfer.
In an interview with AFP, Longoria described the event as an act of "extreme and unprecedented violence." He explained the club's response: "We had to make a decision after an event that crossed acceptable limits for a football club, or any organization. It's a decision that protects the club and the season."
The president emphasized the severity of the confrontation, drawing on the collective experience of the club's leadership. "Roberto De Zerbi has been a coach for 13 years, Benatia has been in top-level football since he was 22, and I started in professional football 20 years ago," Longoria stated. "I think the three of us have enough experience to say that we have never seen anything like this in a locker room."
Longoria admitted that the situation has been difficult for Marseille. "Do you think I'm happy to be in this kind of situation with one of the players who was most successful last season and whom I presented as an example?" he asked. "We are victims of a situation, a fight without limits that is completely unheard of in the world of football."
In their second match of the Ligue 1 season, Marseille is scheduled to host newly-promoted Paris FC.
