Fallen Tennis Star Nick Kyrgios (31) Makes Major Confession: 'I Made a Huge Mistake'

Nick Kyrgios has made a significant revelation on his social media. The spectacular, yet often controversial, former top tennis player announced he tested positive for a banned substance. "I want you to hear this from me first," the Australian wrote in an extensive Instagram statement.

"I recently tested positive for a banned substance in Mallorca after using cocaine. I made a huge mistake, and I take full responsibility for it. My apologies to all my fans, my family, my sponsors, and everyone close to me. Above all, I want to apologize to all the children who look up to me. I know the example this sets, and I am very disappointed in myself."

Return from the Heyday

The 31-year-old Kyrgios was just beginning to make his comeback in tennis after years plagued by injuries and off-court issues. He faded into the background in 2022, before gradually returning in 2024 and 2025. By 2026, he was seen more frequently on court. In singles, he's currently just inside the world's top 1000. In his prime, he was ranked 13th globally and notably reached the Wimbledon final in 2022. That same year, he won the Australian Open doubles title.

No Excuses, But an Explanation

The Australian doesn't want to make excuses for his positive doping test and cocaine use. "But I do want to provide some context about where I've been. The past few years, filled with injuries, have taken their toll, both physically and mentally. My body has no longer been able to do what I expected of it. Having to accept that the end of my career is approaching is harder than I ever imagined," he wrote.

'The Good News Is...'

"I've always said that I didn't choose tennis, but that tennis chose me. But letting that go now is one of the hardest things I've had to realize. Sometimes I felt helpless and alone. However, none of those are excuses for what I've done. The good news is that this has given me a wake-up call. For the next 28 days, I will step away from social media and public life to focus on myself. I ask people to respect my privacy, and especially that of my family. Again, I'm sorry, I regret it. I will work and come back stronger."
