Former Colombian national team striker Radamel Falcao has sharply criticized the structure of Colombian football following the team's elimination in the World Cup Round of 16. Colombia fell to Switzerland 3-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in regular and extra time. Switzerland will now face Argentina for a spot in the semifinals.
“It’s disappointing given the opportunities we had – we couldn’t capitalize on them. At this stage, opponents of this caliber don’t forgive mistakes. Penalties once again clipped our team’s wings. We definitely need to work on this in football, within our clubs, and with the national team. This cannot continue. Teams don’t invest because they know they won’t be relegated to Division C. Players know nothing will happen if they finish last. Our football cannot continue to reward laziness and mediocrity,” Falcao told "Mundo Deportivo."
The striker has scored 36 goals in 105 appearances for the Colombian national team, making him the all-time leading scorer for his country.
