"Last night, I made the decision to step down as head coach of the Netherlands national team. We all dreamed of a World Cup where we could make history. That didn't happen. No one is more disappointed than me. As a head coach, you bear that responsibility," Koeman wrote on his X social media account.

Koeman had been at the helm of the national team since 2023.

At the 2026 World Cup, the "Oranje" topped their group after a 2-2 draw against Japan, followed by convincing victories over Tunisia (3-1) and Sweden (5-1).
