Etson Barros has been discharged from Faro Hospital after just over three months of hospitalization and transferred to a specialized clinic in the Algarve. The young Benfica athlete will now begin a rehabilitation program focused on motor, nutritional, and sensory aspects.
Etson Barros, 25, was involved in a car accident on April 16th, which led to him being placed in an induced coma. After the vehicle overturned, it came to rest on its side, with the driver's door against the ground. Barros was still conscious at the scene, with the coma being induced by medical teams upon his arrival at Faro Hospital.
In this new phase, the athlete will continue to receive specialized support from a multidisciplinary team, in addition to close monitoring from his family and coach, although visits remain somewhat restricted.
A potential return to competition is not yet certain for the long-distance runner, who competed in the last two European Championships (2022 and 2024) and the most recent World Championships (2025), and had set his sights on making his Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028.
