Ubi Franklin’s name is up this week again for another wrong reason. Where last week he was trending for his split with Iyanya, this week sees his name get in the news as Emma Nyra continues her return to music after what was a dark time in her existence.
The singer has taken a long time to get here. Departing Ubi’s Made Men Music Group in 2014, after her position at the label became unbearable to her physical abuse at the hands of her boss and lover, who also got engaged to Lilian Esoro. Emma took a hiatus due to a hard time.
“Ubi and I never dated. Rather he terrorized me for years. He abused me and other members of the label with physical and verbal force. This is why I left Triple MG the first time. He claims he spent money on me but failed to mention that he never gave me my payment for all the tours I have done alongside Iyanya. The true story lies between me and other members of Triple MG who have all chosen to be silent because of fear of one man. I do not support abuse of women or men. That is why I left. I don’t want to be involved with anything that has to do with Ubi Franklin ever again. Honestly, I don’t want to see my name associated with Ubi in any way. Let these lies die down. I am moving on with my career. Thank God” She told Vanguard.
She made the journey to the US, where she grew up, and stayed put, performing at shows, fighting the negativity, and recording new music. Her stay in the US was fruitful, as she bonded with her family, spent time away from the negativity on Nigerian blogs, avoided all the reminders of her pain, and the triggers of her sorrow. Hers was necessary leave, far different from the holidays that she had previously took. But that ended in December. Emma returned, ready to dive right into the scene.
“After I released “Elele” featuring Davido, I released “For My Matter”, the first version and after that I really just took time off to perfect my music. I had a lot of show bookings that I was doing abroad so I was away from Nigeria for almost a year but I came back in December.” She told TVC.
December had her feeling her way into the business. Her social media pages were flooded with rehearsals, and practice sessions, where she continually honed her skill. She avoided questions about her past, skilfully refused to broach the subject, and focused on her music. The first fruits of her return was the remix of her single ‘For my matter’, featuring dancehall star, Patoranking.
“Actually, Patoranking chose me. He called me when he heard my song and he said that he would love to be on the remix and I was very very excited about it so we recorded it. We shot the video in New York.” She said.
Right now, Emma has bigger plans now. Her first personal body of work, “Love Versus Money” is set for release. The EP comes out today, July 18, 2016, and will be available via all digital stores. Gone are the dark days. These are the good days, the all or nothing days, and ultimately, the music days.
