French athlete Elisa Pineau, 27, announced on Tuesday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The revelation came via a video posted on her Instagram account, where the heptathlete addressed the serious topic with a blend of humor and gravity.
The 2025 French heptathlon vice-champion had already missed the indoor winter season. This diagnosis will now "completely disrupt" her participation in summer competitions and the future of her sporting career. The Paris-born athlete described herself in the video as a "free woman, liberated woman."
Despite the gravity of the news, Elisa Pineau maintained a smile and used remarkable self-deprecating humor to share her situation, describing it as "a joke that isn't one."
"I feel like any footballer telling you they should have gone pro but tore their cruciate ligaments," joked the athlete from the Franconville club (Val-d'Oise). "Meaning, in my career, I've been through everything: hamstrings, knees, elbows, shoulders, Achilles tendons – I've done it all, seen it all. A huge dinosaur born before the 2000s... And now, I've leveled up, done better, done something more brilliant, grandiloquent. I aim for the stars, and I got the big one, the big cancer."
Pineau explained that this personal sharing, though rare, was a necessary decision to encourage people to get screened more regularly.
"If you notice any significant, noticeable change, don't hesitate to consult a healthcare professional who will know how to guide you and, certainly, prevent the worst," advised the athlete, adding optimistically that, "normally," she should "get through it and not leave home tomorrow."
The three-minute video was accompanied by a text where Pineau justified her choice of "humor" as a way to "remain herself in the face of this ordeal."
"But I in no way minimize the difficulty of having to live through this. And now that it's time to hit share, I confess I'm no longer playing it smart. Come on, take care of yourselves," she concluded, in a display of courage.
