Ecuador's national team head coach, Sebastian Becaccece, admitted his side was outplayed by hosts Mexico, particularly in the first half, during their 2-0 defeat in the World Cup Round of 16.

The Ecuadorians conceded two goals before halftime, a stark contrast to their defensive record, having not allowed that many goals in any single match since mid-2024.

"They outplayed us in the first half. We responded in the second, but we couldn't find a goal that would have given us new energy," Becaccece stated.

"I am grateful to the players and the entire country for this journey we've had together. I just want to say 'thank you'," the Argentine coach added.

Ecuador exits the 2026 World Cup with one victory against Germany, a draw with Curaçao, and losses to Ivory Coast and Mexico.
