Dutch Keeper Bart Verbruggen Praised After Unusual World Cup Situation: 'That Break Is No Success'

The Dutch national team convincingly defeated Sweden (5-1), but it was certainly not an easy ride for Ronald Koeman's side. According to Sportnieuws.nl analysts Ralf Seuntjens and Robert Maaskant, the Dutch squad should be particularly grateful for goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who distinguished himself on multiple occasions.

"Of course, it wasn't a flattering victory, but we shouldn't ignore the sheer number of shots Sweden had. Verbruggen was incredibly important, especially after those hydration breaks. He truly kept the Dutch national team in the game then," states Maaskant on the Sportnieuws.nl World Cup football podcast.

Dutch Squad Struggled After Hydration Breaks

Especially after the hydration breaks, the Dutch squad found themselves in a tough spot against Sweden, a point Seuntjens also noted. "That break just isn't a success. It allows them to adjust their tactics. From the sidelines, it's incredibly difficult for a coach to make those changes. It then has to be solved on the field, but that's quite challenging in the heat of the moment," opines the 37-year-old striker for Lommel SK.

According to Seuntjens, the team that's trailing benefits most from such an interruption. "That's why a team that's behind gains more from it. A team that's ahead generally thinks: we need to keep going as we are. But you know by now that opponents use that break to make small adjustments to get back into the game. However, it's very difficult to correct that from the sidelines," Seuntjens concludes on the topic.
