Cristopher Nkunku has just been named the best player in the German Bundesliga to cap off his spectacular season with RB Leipzig.

And of course, as is always the case with any player in top form, the links with a Manchester United transfer have been heavy and unrelenting.

Of course, every club could use an attacking midfielder who scored 20 goals and assisted 15 in 34 league games but here are some reasons why Nkunku would become the latest in a long list of expensive flops if he were to join Manchester United.

Who needs Nkunku when you have Bruno

The innate nature of football fans (and most humans by extension) is to crave the latest hot property on the market and that is undoubtedly Christopher Nkunku right now.

But an attacking midfielder is not one of Manchester United’s numerous needs, especially when they already have arguably the best player in that position.

Bruno Fernandes is better than Cristopher Nkunku

Bruno Fernandes is three years older than Nkunku and already tested and trusted in the Premier League, his quality is not in doubt by any means

Despite having a poor season by his standards, Bruno still returned 10 goals and six assists this season, a testament to his high levels of production.

Bruno v Nkunku

Nkunku scored an astonishing 34 goals in all competitions for RB Leipzig this season which is impressive for any striker in any league, let alone a midfielder in a top-five European league.

But before now he scored 31 total goals in his five previous seasons combined for PSG (youth and first-team) and RB Leipzig.

Why would Manchester United ditch an established player like Bruno Fernandes in favour of a player in his breakout season?

Bruno scored 28 goals and provided 17 assists in all competitions last season, similarly outrageous numbers like Nkunku but at a much higher level of football.

Nkunku is not a priority for Manchester United

Having already established that Nkunku should not be signed in place of Bruno, it is time to dispel the notion that he could be brought in as a replacement for another Frenchman, Paul Pogba.

This is a mistake Manchester United have made multiple times before, signing a different player to fulfil a different need such as when Fred was signed as a central midfielder to play defensive midfield.

Even Paul Pogba, a well known central midfielder was brought in when the club desperately needed a defensive midfielder and was judged on that basis his entire career at Old Trafford.

Signing Nkunku to fill the Pogba void would work out almost exactly as Pogba did which is all the warning needed to steer clear of him.

Christopher Nkunku is without a doubt destined for greatness but most likely not at Manchester United and that should be okay for all involved.
