Portugal's World Cup journey ended with a defeat to Spain, marking yet another disappointing exit in the Round of 16. This mirrors previous eliminations at the same stage against the same opponent in 2010, and against Uruguay in 2018.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, this was his ninth knockout stage match at the World Cup without a goal or an assist. The national team captain finally broke his duck in the knockout rounds of this tournament, converting a penalty against Croatia in the Round of 32 – a new elimination phase featuring 32 teams, the same number as the previous group stage format. Check out CR7's performance in World Cup knockout matches in the gallery:

Across six World Cups, Ronaldo has only advanced past the Round of 16 twice: in 2006, when he played as a winger and Portugal reached fourth place; and in 2022, where he was a substitute for Gonçalo Ramos in both knockout games. In 2014, in Brazil, the national team failed to progress beyond the group stage.

In nine matches from the Round of 16 onwards, CR7 accumulated 659 minutes without scoring or assisting. Of these nine games, Portugal only won two within 120 minutes, coincidentally the ones where Ronaldo played the least – against the Netherlands in 2006 and Switzerland in 2022. They drew one (against England, winning on penalties) and lost six.

Despite another disappointing elimination, Ronaldo leaves his mark on the 2026 World Cup with his name etched in several record books. Notably, he surpassed Eusébio as Portugal's all-time leading scorer in World Cup finals.

However, even that statistic highlights a curious point: despite being second in total appearances, Ronaldo doesn't even feature in the top 10 all-time leading scorers, which you can see in the gallery below:
