Controversial World Cup Striker and Father React to Major Uproar: 'Glad Donald Trump Did What He Did'

Folarin Balogun unintentionally became the center of a major controversy at the World Cup. The United States striker was the talk of the town for over 24 hours after his suspension was overturned just before the Round of 16 match against Belgium. Much was said about him, but he hadn't reacted until after the game, which the USA lost 4-1. Balogun and his father spoke to the media about the incident.

Balogun started the match but failed to make an impact. All eyes were on the national team's top scorer, but he couldn't find the net, adding no further goals to his tally of three. The USA was eliminated, and afterward, everyone wanted a word with him. The image after the final whistle was poignant: the Belgian national coach embracing the disappointed forward.

"He (Rudi Garcia, ed.) came to speak with me. I really appreciated that. It's not his fault. He's not to blame for anything. I told him that too. I truly appreciate him coming over to me. I have respect for him," Balogun said about that moment.

Reaction to Overturned Suspension

He also spoke out about the entire situation surrounding his overturned suspension. "Of course, it's controversial when such a decision is reversed. But we accepted the decision when I received the red card, and we also accepted the decision when we were told I was allowed to play."

Balogun's English father, Ben, also reacted to the tumultuous hours leading up to the match for his son. "I'm glad President Donald Trump did what he did (intervening in the matter and calling FIFA to overturn the suspension, ed.). It was good for America, Folarin, and for the national team. I also didn't think his foul warranted a red card, and FIFA apparently agreed," he told Daily Mail.

'I Understand People Aren't Happy'

The reversal caused a significant stir in the football world. FIFA was accused of corruption, and the Belgian FA and UEFA were furious. Ben Balogun understands the controversy. "I understand that people aren't happy with this whole thing. My personal opinion is that politics shouldn't interfere with sports. But I was happy that Folarin could participate. I haven't spoken to him myself, as he doesn't need distractions from home, but I will, of course, warmly welcome him when he returns from the World Cup."
