Former Southampton Coach Mauricio Pochettino Signs £15million Five Year Deal With Spurs
Mauricio Pochettino has officially dumped St. Mary for White Hart Lane. The Argentina born coach who will now head the coaching staff of the Spurs team has signed a five-year deal estimated at £15million.
Pochettino left the Saints on issues surrounding their inability to keep the players who helped them to 8 place finish last season- two places behind his current club Tottenham. But close sources reveal that the former Espanyol coach started giving doubts to his position at Southampton after the departure of then chairman Nicola Cortese who was responsible for bringing the Argentine to St. Mary.
Already the newly signed coach has started boasting about his Spurs team, declaring that they are ''determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success we are all looking to achieve.''
Pochettino is known for his attacking head-on military style of football which helped restructure his former team for big heart-breaking victories over the premiership big boys with the exception of Arsenal.
The 42 year-old becomes the 10th manager at White Hart Lane in 13 years. He hopes to fulfill his Europe ambition with the new Spurs team who are already in the process of restructuring.
Pochettino stated on the club's website that: "This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach"
Pochettino left the Saints for Spurs with his backroom staff of assistant coach Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeper trainer Toni Jimenez.
"Tottenham Hotspur has a huge following across the world and I have great admiration for the passion the fans show for this team.
"There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad,'' Pochettino added.
Former Spurs winger David Ginola thinks The former Argentina defender who took over at the Saints in January 2013 has to be given time to succeed as Spurs coach and should not be expected to give sudden victory.
Ex-Tottenham manager Terry Venables expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of Pochettino at the club: ''I think he looks like a very educated guy as far as football is concerned.
"He did a really good job at Southampton. From what I know and what I see of his team, I think that he will be good for Tottenham." Venables told BBC Sport.
Announcing the appointment, Club chairman David Levy said:
“In Mauricio, I believe we have a head coach who, with his high energy, attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our club.
“He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality. We have a talented squad that Mauricio is excited to be coaching next season,” Levy concluded.
The newly appointed coach is already in the market for on loan Chelsea player Romelu Lukaku, on loan QPR's Loic Remy, Mattia Destro of AS Roma, Real Betis' Alvaro Vadillo; Southampton's Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Jay Rodriguez.
Pochettino's former club have begun the search for a replacement and are looking the ways of one time Celtic manager Neil Lennon, ex Cardiff Malky Mackay, Derby County's Steve McClaren, Murat Yakin who had coached Basel and ex-Swansea manager Michael Laudrup.
