Chelsea is reportedly preparing another sensational transfer. Following news that Danny Welbeck is close to signing with the London Blues, The Athletic has revealed that new manager Xabi Alonso is also keen on acquiring another veteran: Jordan Henderson.
The Stamford Bridge club is a primary contender for the 36-year-old midfielder's signature, with several other Premier League teams also expressing interest.
Brentford is reportedly willing to release Henderson without a transfer fee. The midfielder has one year remaining on the contract he signed as a free agent last summer after arriving from Ajax, but the club is prepared to let him go for free.
Henderson was part of the England squad, managed by Thomas Tuchel, at the World Cup. However, he fractured his left hand after slipping over an advertising hoarding during the Round of 16 victory against Mexico, requiring surgery. He remained with the squad post-operation.
In recent seasons, Chelsea has focused on recruiting younger players, but this summer has seen a shift towards more experienced names. The London club also attempted to bring Granit Xhaka to Stamford Bridge, but their £8 million offer for the 33-year-old was rejected by Sunderland. John Stones was also reportedly on the team's transfer radar.
Last season, Henderson made 22 Premier League starts for Brentford, with an additional 10 appearances off the bench. Between 2023 and 2025, the former Liverpool captain played 57 matches for Ajax.
Since the transfer window opened, Chelsea has made significant moves, securing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a record £117 million for an English player, and also bringing in Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
